In my childhood, I used to think Bengal chief minister is just an qualification of Mr.Jyoti Basu. In ’90s, there were Lalau Yadav and Nitish Kumar in Bihar,Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayavati in Uttar Pradesh and turmoil in coalition govermments at certer. On the contrary, there was only one person in West Bengal. He was Mr. Jyoti Basu. He was almost like a dictator but very aristocate with rare misdemenour unlike his fellow commrades.
As a teen, I used to be charmed by Mamata Banerjee’s emotional outbursts and Badhuadeb Bhattacharya’s rhetoric.I have a sense of anguish against Mr. Basu for his seemingly indiffernce to poor condition of West Bengal. Needless to say, I was much influenced by Media and so-called old people.
Then, I took part in politics in very small way.But that was enough for me to realize that emotion in politics is suicidal. It demands a stoic personality. Here I must accept I don’t undestand how sincere are so called charismatic leaders like President Obama, presnt Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya.I rather admire people like our PM Dr. Monmohan Singh and others who are matured enough not to be provocative and be patient in poltics.
I hold Mr. Jyoti Basu with highest regard and admiration for his political astuteness. As a poltician he was remarkable. Except for one occasion he never lost an election. He was a man of absolute control in most effective form. He retired from poltics in 2000 after ruling Bengal more than 2 decades.Just after a decade of his retirement, communism in Bengal is facing the greatest threat of survival. This alone speaks volume about his poltical leadership.I am kid to judge his earlier deed like land reform, devolution of power and abolition of English from primary education. But what I can tell, we can not rest all blames on Mr. Basu as we know CPI acts a unit where opinion of a invidual does not hold much ground. After all he turned down the offer of becoming PM only to respect Party’s decision.
In the end, he will be remember as a politician, literally. Today as he is no longer with us, I pray for his soul- May his soul rest in peace.
